This hardware attachment allows you to wirelessly connect your iPod to any FM radio and use it to play your iPod music. Griffin was also showing its recently released iTrip for the iPod. RadioSHARK will be shipping by the end of the summer. You can schedule recording times in advance so that you never again have to worry about missing an installment of Car Talk. You can then play it in iTunes or import it to your iPod. Designed to look like a shark fin, it can capture streaming audio from a Web site or anything from its built-in radio. Topping the list of new hardware that caught my eye while strolling the floor was Griffin's RadioSHARK.

Just connect your phone line to its special USB cable and the PhoneValet software can announce who is calling you when the phone rings, can make a log of all your calls, and more. Parliant was displaying its PhoneValet system. Native Instruments also makes several higher end audio programs, such as REAKTOR 4. Somewhat of a competitor for Apple's Soundtrack, it offers more features, a jazzier looking user interface (with an on-screen keyboard), but appeared to have a steeper learning curve. Native Instruments had a very slick sound sampler called KOMPAKT.

But the vendor was selling its LimeWire PRO software, and generating a good amount of foot traffic. Given all the legal controversy over P2P file sharing, it was a bit of a surprise to see the LimeWire booth here. The GnutellaX client LimeWire made its first appearance ever at a Macworld Expo. It appears especially good at spotting problems caused by missing or corrupt fonts. Still, MasterJuggler could well hold its own.

Its recently released Mac OS X native DiskWarrior 3.0 disk repair utility was on display, as was its just released at the Expo MasterJuggler font management utility.
On the plus side, Alsoft did have a booth here.

Nor could they see any preview version of TechTool Pro 4.0 for Mac OS X (now scheduled for release in August). So attendees could not check out the recently released updates to SystemWorks 3.0 and Internet Security 3.0 software. Neither Symantec nor Micromat had booths at the Expo this time around. Especially if you have one of the newer inkjet printers that can print directly to a CD itself, such as the Epson 900 or 960 (also on display here at the Expo), you can easily create labeled CDs that rival what is sold commercially. You can even edit the text from its layout position. What is especially cool is how it can import track lists (such as from iTunes) and have the text wrap around the circular shape of the CD in several different styles. Speaking of CD labels, a new program called simply disclabel does a better job of creating these labels than any competing product we have seen. Print Shop will be available in August.ĭisclabel. In the demo, it all worked smoothly as you navigated the colorful user interface. Among its new OS X specific features: (a) it can import any iCal events list and place it in a calendar layout (b) you can browse iPhoto libraries and import any of its photos to a Print Shop project (you could, for example, add a photo as a background to the calendar layout you created via iCal) (c) you can import iTunes playlists to create custom CD labels. Brought to you by the people ( MacKiev) that developed World Book for OS X, this is not just the old Classic OS program ported to OS X but is a vastly upgraded and superior application. Yes, the old Broderbund product, which appeared to be dead and buried years ago, has been resurrected as Print Shop for Mac. Perhaps the biggest surprise for me was to see a booth featuring Print Shop running on Mac OS X. The book booths (especially O'Reilly and Peachpit) were also consistently packed.
They were also the source of some of the Expo's most interesting new products (as I describe more below). The booths for companies such as Griffin, IOGEAR, Macally, and Belkin seemed to always be bustling with activity. If one subgroup of vendors particularly benefited from this, it was the ones that sell small relatively inexpensive peripherals.
Here's what they would find:Īkin to what happened millions of years ago when the dinosaurs went extinct and the much smaller mammals began to thrive and expand, the absence of the Expo's traditional "big" booths (from vendors such as Microsoft and Adobe) meant that the smaller companies garnered more than their usual share of attention. With a bit of effort, an attendee here in New York could probably see just about everything within about half a day. One advantage of a downsized Macworld Expo exhibit hall is that it takes less time to tour the floor.
